Matthew Barney Biography
Matthew Barney, born on March 25, 1967, in San Francisco, California, is a contemporary American artist whose work spans across various mediums including sculpture, film, photography, and drawing. Barney's artistic journey began early in life, influenced by his upbringing and the diverse environments he was exposed to. At the age of six, his family moved to Boise, Idaho, following his father's new job opportunity. This relocation from the bustling city of San Francisco to the more tranquil and nature-surrounded Boise played a significant role in shaping Barney's artistic sensibilities.
Barney's early life was marked by a blend of athletic and artistic pursuits. In high school, he was actively involved in sports, playing on the football and wrestling teams, which later influenced the physicality and endurance aspects of his art. Despite his athletic inclinations, Barney was also drawn to the arts, a passion that was nurtured through frequent visits to New York City to see his mother, an abstract painter. These visits exposed him to the contemporary art scene, further fueling his interest in pursuing art as a career.
In 1985, Barney was recruited by Yale University to play football, a path that seemed to promise a future in sports. However, his artistic interests prevailed, leading him to switch his major from pre-med to art. This decision marked the beginning of Barney's formal education and exploration in the arts, culminating in his graduation from Yale in 1989 with a BA. His senior thesis, a performance/installation titled "Field Dressing," was an early indication of his fascination with the body, endurance, and the creation of form through resistance, themes that would continue to permeate his work.
After moving to New York in the early 1990s, Barney's career as an artist began to take shape. His first solo exhibition in 1991 at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery showcased his unique approach to art, combining performance, video, photography, drawing, and sculpture. This exhibition, funded by his work as a clothing catalogue model, attracted significant attention, establishing Barney as a promising new artist. His work, characterized by its use of unconventional materials such as petroleum jelly and its exploration of themes such as biology, sexuality, and mythology, defied easy categorization.
Barney's most ambitious and well-known project, "The Cremaster Cycle" (1994-2002), a series of five films, further solidified his reputation as a visionary artist. The films, named after the muscle that controls testicular contractions, are a complex exploration of creation, identity, and sexual differentiation, featuring Barney in various roles. Accompanied by related photographs, drawings, sculptures, and installations, "The Cremaster Cycle" is a testament to Barney's ability to create a multifaceted and immersive artistic universe.
In addition to "The Cremaster Cycle," Barney's other major projects include "Drawing Restraint 9" (2005), a collaboration with his then-partner, Icelandic musician Björk, "River of Fundament" (2014), and "Redoubt" (2018). Each project showcases Barney's continued interest in pushing the boundaries of art, incorporating elements of performance, sculpture, and film to explore themes of transformation, endurance, and the relationship between the body and the environment.
Throughout his career, Barney has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Europa 2000 Prize at the Venice Biennale (1993), the Hugo Boss Prize (1996), and the Kaiser Ring Award (2007). His work is included in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Gallery in London.
Barney's artistic practice is marked by its ambition, complexity, and the seamless integration of various mediums and themes. From his early performances and installations to his expansive film projects, Barney has continually explored the limits of the body, the potential for transformation, and the creation of new mythologies. His work challenges viewers to engage with art in new and unexpected ways, making him one of the most significant and influential artists of his generation.
